New York City: Things to Eat in NYC for Hipsters

NYC Spots

So hipster, it hurts.

Nope. That’s too mainstream.

Here is my rundown of the most Instagram-worthy, most hipster spots in New York City. The places that are perfect for your Instagram grid. From holographic packaging to vegan fastfood, cruffins, pink mosaic tiles and pumpkin spice soft-serve- they have nailed what’s #trending on Instagram.

This might sound superficial and basic, but some of these hipster places actually do have depth. I’ll share more with you.

Love it or hate it, you decide.

PSA. I’m not a hipster.

Dark Chocolate Creamy Ganache Filled Bi-Color Croissant. PC: Supermoon Bakehouse

I was having ice cream at Morganstern’s and spotted someone carrying a fancy rainbow chrome box with the word “Supermoon” on it. Curious, I went to look it up on Google. I hurriedly finished my ice cream and made my way down to this spot, some few blocks away.

Then I found out that Supermoon Bakehouse is related to the wildly popular Mr. Holmes Bakehouse in San Francisco. No wonder, they do bear some similarities in terms of their offerings and branding. I think a key difference is that Supermoon bears a more imaginative menu. By the time I arrived at 3 P.M., about half the day’s bakes were sold out. Pity! I enjoyed their pastries, especially the Cruffin and Croissant. The texture of the puff pastry was amazing, and the flavours melded together so nicely.

Supermoon Bakehouse; 120 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002, USA. Opens daily: 8 AM – 5 PM.

2. Cha Cha Matcha

This is a Matcha bar made of Instagram dreams. From cactus plants, to pink furniture and rainbow matcha lattes- you name it, they have it.

Unfortunately, the pumpkin spice softserve and matcha latte did not quite cut it for me. I prefer my matcha lattes more full-bodied and with bitter notes instead of milky. I enjoyed the GTM (Ginger, Tumeric & Matcha) latte though!

Cha Cha Matcha (various outlets); 373 Broome St, New York, NY 10013, USA. Opens Mon to Fri 8 AM-7 PM. Sat & Sun 9 AM – 8 PM.

Green apples and avocado on toast.
Best. Vegan. Fast-food. Ever.
The food here is pretty life-changing even for non-vegans. by Chloe has a fast-food vibe but is deceivingly healthy.
The guacamole burger is a must-try vegan burger. Don’t miss the sweet potato fries and beet ketchup too.
by Chloe (various outlets); 60 W 22nd St, New York, NY 10010, USA. Opens Mon to Fri 7:30 AM – 10 PM. Sat & Sun 10 AM – 10 PM.

4. Union Square Green Market

Union Square Green Market is a lively outdoor market centrally located in NYC. Visit for fresh produce, cheese, bread, flowers and more! Was lucky to be there during Halloween and managed to see some pumpkin carving action. FlatIron building is just under 10 minutes away by foot.

Union Square Green Market; E 17th St & Union Square W, New York, NY 10003, USA. Closed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

5. Momofuku Milk Bar

Momofuku Milk Bar
Cereal Milk Soft Serve

Milk Bar is an award-winning bakery from founding chef Christina Tosi.  This cereal milk soft serve is cereals-ly good. A must-have whenever I’m in Manhattan. It’s just like the milk in your cereal bowl, flavoured with all the goodness from the cereal. Somewhat nostalgic of my childhood. Milk Bar is also home to other innovative desserts such as the crack pie and compost cookie.

Momofuku Milk Bar (various outlets); 251 E 13th St, New York, NY 10003, USA.
