What’s new to eat in Singapore?

Tono cevicheria

Do you live to eat? Are you always thinking of where to eat next? Then this guide is for you!

I’ve decided to collate a few of my dining spots I have been to recently. Some are hosted tastings, and some on my own. I hope this list will be useful for planning your next meal.

1. TONO Cevicheria for a different kind of dining experience

Tono Cevicheria
Tono Ceviche; market fish, crispy baby calamari, smoked aji, tiger’s milk

TONO is the first-ever Peruvian Cevicheria to hit our shores. In Peruvian colloquial terms, “Tono” means party. That explains the fun party vibes of this place that makes you want to dance. This Cevicheria sure packs a punch with its fresh ingredients that are all natural.

There are four basic ingredients in a ceviche – seafood, citrus (usually lime), chillies, and onions. These components combine with the seafood to form a creamy marinade, or also known as Tiger’s Milk (Le Leche de Tigre) that is used to cure the seafood. They are usually accompanied by Pisco Sour, the classic alcohol beverage of a cevicheria, made of alcohol, citrus, egg white and Angostura bitters.

Tres leches

Although ceviches form the main bulk of the menu, there are also meaty options such as the stir-fried beef, pork belly and grilled chicken. Desserts are not to be missed too, and I’m particularly fond of the Tres Leches with mango and passionfruit.

Do check out this place for an authentic Peruvian cuisine experience, complete with heady Pisco sours, quality wines and salsa music.

Roasted Shallots
Located at a shophouse in Telok Ayer, Moosehead serves cuisine with an edge. While new creations are introduced from time to time, there are some mainstays. Hence, don’t be surprised if you don’t find the same item on your next visit. Upon arriving at the place, you may first notice its eclectic mix of furniture and tables sporting cast-iron sewing machine legs, or that its menu items are not mainstream. The charcoal grill is Moosehead’s specialty, and their dishes embody Mediterranean flavours and influence from around the world. Be sure to visit this dining spot if you are into sharing plates, adventurous eating and love bold flavours. p.s. I heard they have a new lunch menu!

Teppei Syokudo has partnered Michelin Bib Gourmand listed Man Man Unagi Restaurant for a limited time period to offer these delectable unagi dishes. Although the eel is not grilled ala minute, it is still a good option for those who want a taste of Man Man Unagi without having to queue!

4. Brother Bird Soft Serve for coffee and ice cream

Brotherbird
Thai Coconut & Thai Green Milk Tea on Mochi Donut
Brother Bird (under Stateland Cafe) is one of my favourite places to chill at whenever I’m around the Bugis area. They have been launching new softserve flavours for the past couple of months, including the Black Sesame and Gongcha tribute Milk Tea soft serve.

Featured here is their current flavour rotation: Coconut Water Sorbet & Thai Green Milk Tea. If you’re feeling extra peckish, have it with their mochi donut- one of the best creations ever. The donut has a nice chewy bite and complements the ice cream perfectly. We heard that they’re coming up with a new local-inspired flavours because of National Day, do keep your eyes peeled for it!

*This double swirl combination is not on the menu.

5. Yayoi Kusama High Tea at Fullerton Hotel for a leisurely weekend afternoon

Yayoi Kusama FullertonThe Fullerton Hotel Singapore has created a special Afternoon Tea set in conjunction with Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition that is taking place in Singapore. This is the place to spend a lazy afternoon with your best friend while indulging in desserts.  The three-tier high tea contains five specially crafted desserts that represent some of Yayoi Kusama’s artwork, as well as savoury sandwiches and scones. They are all refillable, including the coffee or tea.  This set will be available at The Courtyard until 3 Sep.

The Courtyard at The Fullerton Hotel 1 Fullerton Square, Singapore 049178.

6. Chikin for a Friday night

Chikin – which literally means “chicken” in colloquial Japanese – is a Yakitori & cocktails restaurant-bar. If you enjoy mouthwatering grilled skewers and delectable cocktails in a modern setting, you will love Chikin. Apart from Yakitori, they serve a mean bowl of Unagi and Ebiko fried rice. Be sure to notice the eclectic and quirky decor at their front door, as well as Japanese Pop Art wall paintings within the bar itself!

Chikin Yakitori & Cocktails; 6 Bukit Pasoh Rd, Singapore 089820.

7. Dehesa for ladies who lunch

Dehesa Dehesa Singapore

Dehesa, a modern Spanish tapas restaurant recently launched a new lunch menu. This place is great for diners who wish to taste experimental Spanish food. Some of our favourites include the Beetroot with Burrata salad, Lala (Clams) and tender-grilled Octopus with torched cured lardo on a bed of potatoes.  At $28 for 2 courses and $38 for 3 courses, it is a rather affordable dining option in the CBD. Are you ready to #SwineWineDine at Dehesa?

Dehesa; 12 N Canal Rd, Singapore 048825.

8. Amamoto Cafe for a post-work out snack

Housed within Raffles Place basement as a takeaway kiosk, Amamoto is a new addition to the list of healthy CBD dining options. They serve up variations of Japanese Fermented rice drinks (also known as Amazake) – ranging from the standard drink itself to some mixed with cold-pressed fruit juices. The amazake base contains no added sugar or preservatives and is supposed to be good for your skin.

Start your day with the Amamoto Chia Seed Parfait (very reasonably priced at $5.80), also one of my personal favourites. I enjoyed the amazake drinks, including the Kinako (roasted soybean), Matcha & Ginger. For lunch, they offer Quinoa Protein Salads with dressings infused with amazake (Yuzu or Sesame), with flavourful meat toppings marinated in amazake. I took home a bottle of Pure Amazake which I’ve been using to create healthful beverages by adding almond/ soy milk and matcha powder.

Amamoto Cafe; 1 Raffles Place #B1-39, One Raffles Place Singapore 048616.
